Self-Build Diary Part 7 It Just Keeps Getting Better

With just a few more days of finishing off to go, as you can see the landscaping has transformed this self-build project from a building site into a stunning 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom home.

Set in a picture perfect woodland setting in the Shropshire countryside we are now undertaking the decking project that will provide this home with a stepped entrance and decking to the side door to complete the whole project beautifully.

Inside we are a week away as the final decorating, plumbing & heating and testing all takes place and we get ready for the handover after a final clean.

At over 272 square metres this home is actually more than double in size of an average 4 bedroom detached home in the UK and with a lot of hard work from everyone involved it is a project we are very proud to have been involved with.

The Feature Window Is In

Just like adding the last piece to a jigsaw puzzle, the large feature window completes the look and style of the house giving the occupants an enviable view of the lovely woodland setting and newly laid lawns.

The selection of UPVC windows is in this build was for security and ease of maintenance and the choice of oak exterior and white interior windows suited the style and colours of the house perfectly.

Windows today can be almost any colour with all the new technology available and with wooden cladding as an exterior finish you can choose to make a feature of them if you wish when you are self-building.

The Stunning Front Elevation

Echoing the dormer windows on the front elevation and providing a large feature window to enjoy the view and let lots of natural light into the open plan living area is the large feature window.

Feature windows with large areas of glass are one of the most requested design elements to self-build homes. With higher insulation than a standard built house and low energy glass large windows like these are now more popular than ever.

The Rear Elevation

Showing off the size of this self-build property is the rear elevation pictured above. With four large dormer bedrooms (all with en-suites) upstairs the house has been purpose made for its use.

The cost of heating a home this size will be kept to a minimum due to the extremely high insulation properties associated with SIPS construction.

Laying good quality turf is the easiest way to transform your building site into a garden while you plan what other outdoor landscaping projects you can add to the overall design over time.

With A Living Area Of Over 100 Square Metres You Are Literally Spoiled For Space

With the second fix electrics coming to a finish, and the final coat of paint going on the walls and woodwork, the house is ready for final testing and checking this week.

It’s hard to believe that in just over 13 weeks a complete house has emerged from architects drawings through the arduous Local Planning stages to nearing completion.

As with all self-build projects changes to the design have been requested and incorporated and the customer’s input has been professional throughout.

As we look forward to completion of this project we also look forward to inspiring & helping others self-build in the UK as we embark on the next phase of what has been our mission statement since we began back in 2011.

You can rent, you can buy or you can self-build!

  1. As the feature window goes into place, the final piece of the puzzle is complete.
  2. The oak on white UPVC windows add to the natural colours and finishes used in the construction.
  3. The landscaping transform the building site into a garden.
  4. With just the new decking project to complete and finishing touches we are almost there.
