Self-Build Diary Part 4 (Build Phase Week 2) It’s Up!

With the weather forecasting heavy thunderstorms at the end of last week the race was on to complete the roof of the new build self-build project in Shropshire.

Thanks to the UK weather forecasters getting it slightly wrong again it rained all day on Saturday but it did not stop the build from reaching the second level and roof panels were put in place by Friday night.

If you have been reading up and researching about SIPS (Structurally Insulated Panel Systems) as a way of building but wondered about why this method is preferred to a traditional build, SPEED plays an enormous part in the process.

Hot on the tail of last week’s self-build diary part one (which you can read by clicking here) you can see for yourself why SIPS construction is a great way to self-build your dream home.

In just 5 more working days this is the result!

Build Phase Week 2 Roof Panels Being Craned Into Position

Thanks in the main to extremely well organised and efficient build team, the upper floor of the new dwelling is on and by the end of the week the final roof panels were craned into place.

Choosing to build in the right way is vital to your self-build success. As you can see from the photos we have shared over the last few weeks, self-building a home is way beyond a DIY task and as this is likely to be your home for the next decade or so investing in the right things will save you a lot of headaches and heartache in the future.

This is also one of the key reasons we choose to switch to a UK SIPS manufacturer earlier this year.

The Upper Floor Level Under Construction

With all the upper floor bedrooms having en-suites and all being dormer window style rooms, the roof area and wall areas will be very well insulated and strong being constructed of SIPS panels.

The Crane Lifts The Roof Panels Into Place

The team worked professionally, diligently and with careful consideration to Health & Safety as the final piece of the giant “puzzle” were put into place.

At this stage of the project with just a few days of the build phase left it is time to invite other tradesmen to survey the site and view the build, and confirm start dates to avoid any undue delays.

A Little Help From Our 4 Year Old Grandson

This is our Grandson (Oliver aged 4 1/2) learning the crane operators hand signals for up, down and increase tension.  (We now have a corner plot on the garden with a toy crane, dump truck and an excavator as he has learned the process of self-building for himself from the ground up.)

Maybe his generation will be a nation of self-builders!

With 2 Weeks Of The Build Phase Completed The Shell Is Up!

As the build progresses, we will bring you more updates of this close-up on self-building that will hopefully inspire you and others to take up the challenge, shun the commercially built houses and self-build your own home.

As you see the design here is very English (the Local Planning Authority’s recommendation) and will feature an open plan downstairs living space with a feature window at the front.
