Outdoor Dining inspiration For The Bank Holiday Weekend

"Outdoor Dining Ideas"

There is always something special about the end of May Bank Holiday, it’s usually the first really warm period of the year when the BBQ season really gets underway. With this year’s Chelsea Flower Show coming to a close, the Eurovision song contest and an extra long weekend with Summer just around the corner you don’t need many more excuses for a party in the garden.

Outdoor dining has evolved quite a bit over the last few years with the popularity of gas barbecues and outdoor rattan furniture combining to make any outdoor dining experience just that little bit more comfortable, stylish and easy.

Depending on which aspect your garden faces and whether you like to sit in full sun or prefer to create a covered more private area for your outdoor dining space, in today’s feature article we have a variety of ideas for gardens of all sizes that will hopefully help you create your own outdoor dining area which you can enjoy for many years to come.

Creating The Perfect Setting For Watching The Sun Set

It’s one of the most beautiful times of the day when you can simply sit and watch as the sun goes down. It also casts the most flattering light and warm colours across everything it graces.

The sunset creates a whole warmth to any outdoor living or dining area where you can use soft furnishings, warm toned colours and natural fabrics and materials for your furniture and furnishing as in the photo above.

It’s the perfect place to relax with your friends and family after the evening barbecue has come to an end and evening turns to-night.

For A Smaller Area Why Not Choose A Bar?

For a smaller area (or for some of our younger barbecue enthusiasts) why not choose a bar area with stools as your main entertainment area. Bars immediately conjure up that holiday mood and if you know how to mix a few cocktails this is the perfect environment to do it.

The bar above has been constructed of stone so is a permanent feature. If this is something you are thinking of doing there is nothing to stop you building in an outdoor fridge and kitchen on one side of the bar and allowing seating for guests on the other.

Light up those solar lights for atmosphere and add music and you might just find yourself transported away to your favourite holiday destination.

Hard Landscaping Makes A Permanent Feature Of This Outdoor Dining Area

Hard landscaping creates a permanent and attractive addition to any home and making a feature in the paving of a circle is a lovely idea that is beautifully set off by the round dining table.

Rattan outdoor furniture makes for the most comfortable and modern seating today and by setting the table as you would in a restaurant your friends and family will be eagerly awaiting what scrumptious food you are going to prepare on the outdoor kitchen.

As our evenings can still get cold (unlike Mediterranean or tropical ones) the heat from an outdoor kitchen can often be enough to keep guests warm. If not think about a patio heater or fire pit for adding warmth and atmosphere for later in the evening.

A Pergola In Any Corner Creates The Perfect Outdoor Room

Depending on where the sun shines on your garden in the evening will probably determine where you create your outdoor dining area. As you can see in the example shown above any average sized garden can benefit from a designated outdoor dining / living area when it is defined with a structure like a pergola.

If you are creating this area yourself it is a good idea to think about adding in an outdoor fridge and worktop space next to your barbecue to save lots of fetching and carrying from the main house.

Comfortable wicker or rattan chairs offer an easy way to create somewhere you can relax and enjoy the summer days and evenings.

For Comfort And Style Choose Rattan

Not so long ago white plastic patio sets were all the rage (considering they quickly turned green, scratched easily and became brittle in the sun and cracked) might be a few of the reasons we have progressed to a new fashion in outdoor dining and lounge type furniture made from all-weather rattan.

We really love the mix of a traditional wooden table (which is picked up in the arms of the rattan chairs in the picture above) and the comfort and style of these rattan chairs. Outdoor cushions make everything that little bit more comfortable and most furniture sets have rain covers available to cope with our sometimes unpredictable weather.

You may also want to invest in some of those brilliant citrus candles to help keep those pesky flies away (especially if you have water nearby)

Why Not Add Some Of These To Make It A Real Celebration

  1. Choose the perfect spot for your outdoor space based on where the sun is in the evening in your garden
  2. For a modern look with style and comfort choose rattan outdoor furniture.
  3. If you have a small space or balcony consider a bar for entertaining.
  4. For a permanent feature use hard landscaping and build in a fridge, barbecue and wine cooler if you have the space!
